I do patchwork & quilting

I guess the first rule is to wash all fabrics before you cut into them - this will pre-shrink the fabric.

Ensure you have a consistant seam allowance across the item, and when you are actually piecing the item keep to the seam allowance, as if that is out, the whole project can go wrong.

Good luck with your project, if you're anything like me you will quickly become addicted to it.

I tried quilting for a while, but was too impatient with piece all the little pieces together so the seams met up straight. Horrible, I know! I suppose quilting is just not for me. I also skipped the rule of washing the fabric first. Perhaps if I washed it afterward, all the pieces would shrink in different ways and then the seams would match up. That would be magical.

I just adore the finished look of a well made quilt - but I have absolutely no idea where or how to start!

When you're finished with yours katharina, you'll have to post some photos for us

A quilt always bring some nostalgic memories - seeing one never fails to transport me to some not-so-distant past. I used to see my grandmother making one quilted design after another so I guess I grew to appreciate it! Personally, I haven't tried to make one myself . Gotta try it some time.

I totally agree on this. You may pass it from one generation to another. It may not be material wealth but it is made from pure love and care. I asked my wife to make one for our family

I agree that quilts can be the most amazing heirlooms to pass down through the generations. I really want to make each of my sons a quilt for their room now, but those would be simple ones just for everyday warmth use. They can take quite a while to make.
