More often than not, the prices are really based on the quality of the beads. Sometimes it is also based on what the beads actually mean or what it represents. Based on experience, beads that represent wealth or money and love are the ones that are really expensive. Those that represent health are also expensive.

I'm not sure, but I always find myself looking at the "natural" beads. The earthy wooden ones, etc. They are so pretty without being made into anything. They are also expensive. I haven't tried beading as a craft yet.

I came from a traditioanl gold & silver jewellery background and have moved into beading as an quicker and more creative way of creating pieces. I see the prices of some of the non precious beads and can't beleive how expensive they are when I compare to something Im more used to using - silver beads. You can pick up plain, patterned or finished silver beads often for less than glass, dichoric and even plastic and although they lack colour impact, having a silver accent really adds something to the piece.
I buy my beads at cooksongold and for a pack of 20 silver 3mm beads cost just over £1.

I've also been seduced by craft shops but with a bit of restrain going on ebay and the internet you can often find the exact same pieces for a lot less.
Try Jewellery Findings - UK Supplier for silver beads.
